Life Before Cell Phones

I was asked by a Grand Daughter, how did Pop and I manage life without Cell Phones.

We were more or less pioneers in our day,,We drove out to California to live in our fourth month of marriage..We did not have a house to live in or know very much about California. We were living in Cleveland Ohio in an apartment, It was cute and modern and had a living room and kitchenette and a bed room and bath, I think it was the suburb of Collinwood..Sallie was working at a downtown bank and Dominic was working second shift at a machine shop.

Dominics machine shop laid some people off..Dominic was one of the ones laid off. When Sallie would come home from work Dominic was happily cleaning the apartment,,He had filled out an application for work with a recruiter from Lockheed Missiles and Space in Sunnyvale California.

One morning a man called on our phone and said.."Good morning, it is a beautiful Sunny Day in 
Sunnyvale Califronia. We would like to offer you a position as a Machinist. We will pay your travel and relocation expenses."

We had no hesitation in starting our journey to California..leaving our parents and Dominic's home town of Nanty Glo PA. A North American Van Lines came and packed up our belongings and we took Dominic's little corvair on the road trip..The Van Lines would have taken our car too but we thought the road trip would be an exciting adventure.

The country was beautiful and we were so happy to cross the Mississippi and the Great West..We stayed at very inexpensive little motels on the way. We felt so lucky to be able to see the sights of this road trip..We  went through the Rockies and the Great Plains and finally to California. We were newly married and in love and had not a worry in the world..

Apartments in Sunnyvale were plentiful at that time so we lost no time in finding a cute little apartment there and had the moving people deliver our furnishings.. I noticed that my Dad's brother and his wife lived in a nearby community , Palo Alto.., so we went by to visit them.

We did not have a wall phone in the New apartment, After all we did not know anyone in our new State except the one Uncle and his wife, and we discovered a cousin living in Palo Alto, and found another one living in San Diego area,,But we just liked to go adventuring when Dominic was "off work"

Since we were still "honeymooners' We did not take much interest in other people.We wanted to see San Francisco and Lake Tahoe,,and movies and such..
