An Age Of Giants

The other night, I was lying awake thinking of how my Dad would say that the greatest champions of all time belonged to his generation. He actually called the leaders and celebrities of his day Giants.

My Dad always said that he was born in an age of  giants . He attained his twenty first birthday in 1924.  There were many great athletes , authors, and celebrities of his generation. To name a few there were :

Ty Cobb ,"The Georgia Peach", a great and colorful outfielder. He was my Dad's favorite ball player. He had the most stolen bases and my Dad liked to relate how he would sit in the dugout eyeing the second baseman of the opposing team and sharpening his spikes.

Dizzy Dean, Baseball Pitcher for The St Louis Cardinals and later the The Chicago Cubs..His team was known as "The Gashouse Gang" " No one seems to know exactly who was the first to call that year’s Cards the "Gashouse Gang," but everyone agrees that the nickname had to do with the team’s close resemblance to the rowdy, dirt-streaked assemblage of thugs who hung around the Gashouse District on Manhattan’s East Side."
